What is Your Life Insurance Policy

Life Insurance PolicySince the beginning of the year, our FUSION community has experienced many deaths. These highly human, emotionally deep and rich lessons have brought up the topic of Life Insurance Policies on several occasions.

What a fabulous metaphor for living life! I believe there are two very different life insurance policies – one is the policy that we most commonly think of  – the policy is purchased and paid for with cash year to year and will pay out when the policy matures and or upon the death of the one insured.

The second policy not so commonly thought of – we also pay for, however in a much different manner. We pay for this second policy through our practice, training, through sweat, tears, long walks with fore-lone friends and cups of tea with elders.

The song Season of Love from the musical RENT provides great language to emphasis the point

How do you measure a year in a life?

In daylights, in sunsets

In midnights, in cups of coffee

In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.

How do you measure, a year in the life? Well, how about LOVE?

What we observed, through all the experiences so far this year, is the magnitude and wealth in the strength of friendships, in the importance of deep relationships. Relationships that have been nurtured, cared for, invested in, day after day, week after week, month after month.

We seem to live in a world that has often mandated “paying our bills on time” and in fact offers a “credit premium” for such acts. Yet our material credit worthiness is quiet insufficient at times of human need. The quality of deep relationships – is priceless.

When our friends have loved ones who die or experience an exceptional human tragedy, often times the best we can do is show up, be present and listen. Our ability to show up is contingent upon the time we have spent on the mat training, practicing, doing what is required to clear away the impediments on our spirit journey so we can be present, so we can be a sound, solid, compassionate being when called upon to be a friend, to be of service to another.

My Life Insurance Policy is my investment in my practice and carrying out that practice off the mat – moment to moment, day to day, week to week, on the journey of life with you – thank you for that gift of living a deep and sustained human experience on planet earth.
